RO4350B is a high-performance hydrocarbon ceramic laminate specifically engineered for high-frequency RF applications. It has become one of the most widely used core PCB materials for 5G communications, RF and microwave circuits, and high-power active device designs. Its greatest advantage lies in combining outstanding high-frequency electrical performance with compatibility with conventional PCB manufacturing processes, eliminating many of the processing challenges and high costs traditionally associated with high-frequency laminates.

Unlike PTFE-based materials that require plasma surface activation, specialized through-hole preparation, and other complex fabrication procedures, RO4350B can be processed using standard PCB manufacturing techniques. Conventional processes such as mechanical surface preparation, solder mask application, ENIG finishing, and plated through-hole copper deposition can all be performed without modifying existing production lines, significantly reducing both manufacturing costs and the barriers to mass production.

In addition, RO4350B is certified to UL 94 V-0 flame-retardant standards, making it suitable for demanding environments involving high-power RF circuits and active electronic devices. Compared with traditional microwave laminates, it offers a far more attractive balance between performance and cost while providing excellent scalability for volume production.

RO4350B is manufactured using a proprietary hydrocarbon ceramic composite reinforced with woven glass fiber. This material combines the strengths of two traditional PCB substrate technologies. It delivers the ultra-low dielectric loss and stable electrical performance associated with PTFE-based laminates while maintaining the excellent mechanical strength, easy machinability, and manufacturing compatibility of epoxy glass fiber materials. As a result, it provides an exceptionally well-balanced solution for medium-to-high-end high-frequency applications.

The material features a dielectric constant (Dk) of 3.48 ± 0.05 measured at 10 GHz, offering excellent consistency and precise impedance control. Compared with many conventional high-frequency laminates, RO4350B exhibits a much tighter dielectric tolerance and outstanding stability across temperature variations. While many standard RF materials experience dielectric constant variations exceeding ±0.1 under wide-temperature, high-frequency operating conditions, RO4350B maintains remarkably stable performance throughout the common operating range of -40°C to 125°C, with batch-to-batch variations typically remaining below 0.02. This consistency enables precise impedance matching, stable signal propagation, and reduced signal distortion, making it particularly suitable for precision RF circuits and high-frequency antenna designs.

Another major advantage is its extremely low dissipation factor (Df). At 10 GHz, RO4350B has a loss tangent of only 0.0037, placing it among the industry's low-loss RF substrates. Since dielectric loss becomes increasingly significant as operating frequency rises, minimizing signal attenuation is critical in microwave and millimeter-wave systems. The exceptionally low dielectric loss of RO4350B allows high-frequency signals to travel with minimal energy dissipation, improving signal integrity and transmission efficiency. This makes the material particularly suitable for 5G base stations, millimeter-wave communication equipment, RF power amplifiers, and other applications where signal loss directly affects overall system performance.

RO4350B also provides excellent thermal stability. Its coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) along the Z-axis is approximately 32 ppm/°C, enabling outstanding resistance to thermal deformation. During soldering operations and long-term thermal cycling, PCB substrates are subjected to repeated expansion and contraction that may lead to trace cracking, layer separation, or solder joint failure. The relatively low CTE of RO4350B minimizes these risks by reducing thermal stress within multilayer RF boards, thereby improving structural integrity and long-term reliability in demanding environments such as automotive electronics and outdoor communication infrastructure.

To accommodate various PCB architectures and power requirements, RO4350B is available in a comprehensive range of standard thicknesses, including 0.101 mm, 0.168 mm, 0.254 mm, 0.338 mm, 0.422 mm, 0.508 mm, 0.762 mm, and 1.524 mm. Thinner laminates are ideal for compact RF modules and multilayer hybrid constructions, while thicker materials provide enhanced insulation, mechanical support, and thermal management for high-power RF equipment. This broad selection allows designers to optimize board structures across consumer communications, industrial RF systems, automotive electronics, and numerous other applications.

One of RO4350B's most practical advantages is its outstanding manufacturability. Its fabrication process is fully compatible with conventional FR4 PCB manufacturing technology, allowing manufacturers to utilize existing production equipment without investing in specialized machinery or introducing additional processing steps. Compared with PTFE-based RF materials that require dedicated fabrication techniques, RO4350B significantly shortens production cycles and lowers manufacturing costs while maintaining excellent electrical performance. This combination of high performance and manufacturing efficiency makes it an ideal choice for large-scale production of high-frequency PCBs.

Thanks to its stable broadband electrical characteristics, excellent thermal resistance, flame-retardant properties, and mature processing technology, RO4350B has become one of the most widely adopted high-frequency PCB materials in the communications industry. Typical applications include 5G base station antennas, terminal antennas, microwave RF modules, high-power RF amplifier circuits, automotive millimeter-wave radar systems, active RF devices, and high-frequency sensing equipment.

FR4, by contrast, remains the industry's most widely used general-purpose PCB substrate. It is valued for its excellent balance of mechanical reliability, affordability, and manufacturing versatility, making it the preferred material for consumer electronics, industrial control equipment, automotive electronics, and countless other applications. However, FR4 and RO4350B are designed for fundamentally different operating environments, and material selection should be based on factors such as operating frequency, environmental conditions, reliability requirements, and cost objectives.

One of the most important selection criteria for FR4 is its glass transition temperature (Tg), which determines the material's thermal resistance and structural stability at elevated temperatures. FR4 laminates are generally classified into standard, medium-Tg, and high-Tg grades. Higher Tg materials offer greater resistance to thermal deformation, delamination, and mechanical stress during soldering and long-term high-temperature operation.

Standard Tg materials are generally sufficient for conventional low-frequency single- or double-layer PCBs, whereas multilayer boards, automotive electronics, and industrial equipment operating under elevated temperatures should utilize high-Tg FR4 to ensure long-term reliability. Choosing manufacturers capable of maintaining consistent material quality is equally important for large-scale production.

Operating frequency is another decisive factor when choosing between FR4 and RO4350B. Conventional FR4 typically has a dielectric constant ranging from 4.2 to 4.7 and a dissipation factor of approximately 0.015 at 10 GHz. While these characteristics are entirely adequate for low-frequency applications, dielectric loss increases significantly as frequency rises, leading to greater signal attenuation, unstable electrical parameters, and reduced signal integrity.

In comparison, RO4350B maintains a highly stable dielectric constant of 3.48 ± 0.05 with an exceptionally low loss tangent of 0.0037, providing far superior performance in microwave and millimeter-wave applications. Consequently, standard FR4 remains the preferred choice for conventional low-frequency circuits because of its low cost, while high-frequency designs often benefit from hybrid stack-ups combining FR4 and RO4350B to achieve both superior electrical performance and economical manufacturing.

Mechanically, high-quality FR4 provides excellent tensile strength, flexural resistance, and impact durability, allowing PCBs to withstand vibration, mechanical loading, and repeated thermal cycling. Standard FR4 materials also comply with UL 94 V-0 flame-retardant requirements, maintaining structural integrity under abnormal operating conditions such as overheating or electrical short circuits. These characteristics make FR4 particularly suitable for industrial automation, automotive systems, aerospace electronics, and other applications requiring high mechanical reliability and operational safety.

Cost efficiency remains one of FR4's greatest advantages. Supported by a highly mature manufacturing ecosystem and well-established global supply chain, FR4 is currently the most economical PCB substrate available. Its reliable performance, long service life, and minimal maintenance requirements make it an ideal permanent structural material for large-scale production of consumer electronics and industrial products. For applications that do not require high-frequency performance or extremely tight electrical tolerances, FR4 offers outstanding value while significantly reducing overall hardware costs.

FR4 also demonstrates excellent environmental durability. It provides stable dimensional performance and strong resistance to moisture and chemical corrosion, allowing circuits to operate reliably under humid conditions, mild chemical exposure, and varying temperatures. Modern environmentally compliant FR4 materials are manufactured to meet international environmental standards and do not release hazardous substances during normal operation, making them suitable for applications across consumer electronics, industrial equipment, transportation, and aerospace sectors.

From an electrical standpoint, FR4 offers excellent insulation resistance and reliable dielectric performance for low-frequency circuits, ensuring stable signal transmission and effective electromagnetic isolation in the majority of electronic products. However, because of its relatively high dielectric loss and greater parameter variation at microwave frequencies, FR4 cannot match the signal integrity required for high-frequency RF applications. This limitation clearly distinguishes it from specialized RF materials such as RO4350B.

Thanks to its balanced performance, exceptional cost-effectiveness, and mature manufacturing technology, FR4 remains the dominant substrate for multilayer printed circuit boards across virtually every sector of the electronics industry. It is widely used in smartphones, household appliances, consumer electronics, communication equipment, networking products, automotive control systems, new energy vehicles, industrial automation, and general aerospace electronics.

Rather than competing with one another, FR4 and RO4350B serve complementary roles. FR4 continues to be the preferred substrate for cost-sensitive, low-frequency, high-volume applications, where selecting an appropriate Tg grade can satisfy reliability requirements while maintaining competitive production costs. For high-frequency RF systems, high-power circuits, and precision signal transmission, RO4350B provides the electrical performance necessary to meet demanding design specifications.

In many modern products, hybrid PCB constructions combining FR4 with RO4350B offer the ideal balance between electrical performance, manufacturing efficiency, and overall cost, enabling engineers to optimize both technical performance and commercial competitiveness.
